September 2024 bis 5. Januar 2025 im Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam statt. Dies war der zweite Veranstaltungsort dieser wichtigen Ausstellung, die im Barbican Centre in London (13.2. bis 26.5.2024) begann. Nach dem Besuch der Ausstellung in Amsterdam war ich etwas entt\u00e4uscht, obwohl ich die Arbeiten vieler gro\u00dfartiger K\u00fcnstler gesehen habe. Dies lag an dem Fokus der Ausstellung auf Macht und Politik. Es erweckte bei mir den Eindruck, dass Kuratoren der bildenden Kunst Textilkunst immer noch mit Vorbehalten begegnen. Es sei denn, sie dr\u00fcckt Rebellion oder Protest gegen soziale Ungerechtigkeit aus. Wenn Textilkunst vollst\u00e4ndig akzeptiert w\u00e4re, br\u00e4uchte sie keine speziellen politischen oder modische Themen. Die \u00e4u\u00dferst erfolgreichen \u00dcberblicksausstellungen von Sheila Hicks in D\u00fcsseldorf\/Bottrop und von Olga de Amaral in Paris sind \u00fcberzeugende Kunstausstellungen, auch ohne politischen Bezug!<\/p>\n<p>Die Kuratoren von &#8216;Unravel&#8217; fragten sich: \u201eWas bedeutet es, sich eine Nadel, einen Webstuhl oder ein Kleidungsst\u00fcck als Werkzeug des Widerstands vorzustellen?\u201c \u201eWie k\u00f6nnen Textilien die Welt um uns herum auspacken, hinterfragen, abwickeln, entwirren und somit neu erfinden?\u201c Sie hatten verstanden, dass \u201edas Medium innerhalb der Hierarchien der westlichen Kunstgeschichte historisch unterbewertet wurde. Textilien wurden als Handwerk betrachtet, das im Widerspruch zu Definitionen der bildende Kunst stand, als weiblich geschlechtlich zugeordnet und vom Kunstmarkt an den Rand gedr\u00e4ngt.\u201c Die Organisatoren wollten \u00fcber 40 internationale K\u00fcnstler zeigen, die diese Zuordnung in Frage stellen. \u201eDiese K\u00fcnstler nutzen das Medium, um kraftvoll \u00fcber pers\u00f6nliche Alltagsgeschichten zu sprechen und umfassendere soziale und politische Themen zu erkunden &#8230; sie widersetzen sich den traditionellen Erwartungen an Textilien &#8230; sie greifen auf die Materialgeschichte zur\u00fcck, um Ideen in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Arbeit, Werte und \u00d6kologie aufzuzeigen, w\u00e4hrend sie gleichzeitig das Wissen der Vorfahren sowie Geschichten von Unterdr\u00fcckung, Ausbeutung und Handel zeigen, die oft mit Textilien verflochten sind&#8230;\u201c<br \/>\nStatt der chronologischen Geschichte der Textilkunst zu folgen, bietet die Ausstellung thematische Dialoge zwischen K\u00fcnstlern \u2013 \u00fcber Generationen und Regionen hinweg \u2013 wie K\u00fcnstler Textilien genutzt haben, um Machtregime zu kritisieren oder herauszufordern\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Die Werke wurden in sechs Kategorien gruppiert, viele der K\u00fcnstlernamen aus diesen Kategorien waren austauschbar und nicht sehr pr\u00e4zise, aber der Gesamteindruck war der einer Au\u00dfenseiter-Kunstform, die dank provokativer Werke auf dem Kunstmarkt auftaucht. Wenn Textilkunst wirklich Anerkennung gefunden hat, warum dann dieser Fokus auf Macht und Politik?<\/p>\n<p>1. \u201eSubversive Stitch\u201c f\u00fcr die Verwendung von Textilien als Vehikel f\u00fcr Befreiung, Ausdauer und sogar Protest (u.a. Judy Chicago, Tracey Emin, Ghada Amer),<br \/>\n2. \u201eFabric of Everyday life\u201c (u.a. Sheila Hicks, Faith Ringgold, Malgorzata Mirga-Tas)<br \/>\n3. \u201eWound and Repair\u201c weist auf das heilende Potential der Arbeit mit Stoff und Faden hin<br \/>\n(u.a. Louise Bourgeois, Diedrick Brackens, Harmony Hammond)<br \/>\n4. \u201eBorderlands\u201c: Statt einer Grenze k\u00f6nnen Grenzgebiete Orte tiefgreifender Kreativit\u00e4t sein (u.a. Kimsooja, T. Vinoja, Cian Dayrit)<br \/>\n5. \u201eBearing Witness\u201c: Verwendung von Textilien zur Dokumentation oder zum Protest gegen politische Gewalt (u.a. Die anonymen \u201earpilleristas\u201c aus Chile, Hannah Ryggen, Violeta Parra)<br \/>\n6. \u201eAncestral Threads\u201c: Diese K\u00fcnstlerinnen holen alte Techniken und Materialien zur\u00fcck, erlernen sie neu und beschw\u00f6ren sie herauf, um auf neue Weise zu kommunizieren<br \/>\n(u.a. Magdalena Abakanowicz, Yee I-Lann, Tau Lewis)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Die zweite Textile Revolution<\/strong><br \/>\nAufgrund der Vielzahl wichtiger Textilkunst-Ausstellungen im Jahr 2024, wie der Sheila Hicks-Retrospektive in der Kunsthalle D\u00fcsseldorf und im Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop, der \u201eWoven Histories \u2013 Textiles and Modern Abstraction\u201c in der National Gallery of Art in Washington und der \u201eOlga de Amaral\u201c-Ausstellung in der Fondation Cartier in Paris, kam mir der Begriff \u201eZweite Textilrevolution\u201c wieder in den Sinn. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ich ihn bereits in meinem Blog geschrieben habe, aber er war einer der m\u00f6glichen Titel eines neuen Buches \u00fcber Textilkunst, das ich plane, falls ich jemals Zeit daf\u00fcr finde. Jetzt, da Textilien in wichtigen internationalen Museen und Zeitschriften so pr\u00e4sent sind, erkennen auch andere Aktivisten aus der bildenden Kunst, was zehn Jahre nach Anfang dieser Revolution passiert. Elizabeth Markevitch von ikono.tv Berlin erkl\u00e4rt auf Instagram, dass 2024 das Jahr der Textilkunst war: \u201eFr\u00fcher als \u201aHandwerk\u2018 oder \u201aFrauenarbeit\u2018 abgetan, hat sich die Textilkunst als die neueste Obsession der Welt herausgestellt \u2026 nicht nur ein Trend, sondern eine Revolution \u2026 Kunstgeschichte wird neu geschrieben.\u201c Ihrer Ansicht nach \u201ezeigt die Ausstellung \u201aUnravel\u2018, dass in Textilien kraftvolle politische Statements gewebt sein k\u00f6nnen.\u201c Es ist erfreulich zu sehen, dass sich immer mehr Fachleute aus dem Kultursektor endlich dieser zweiten Textilrevolution bewusst werden, die 2014 begann (die erste fand Anfang der 60er Jahre auf der Biennale von Lausanne statt) und in den letzten zehn Jahren in meinem Blog dokumentiert wurde.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Was gab es in &#8216;Unravel&#8217; zu sehen?<\/strong><br \/>\nDa waren die gro\u00dfen Namen bekannter Textilk\u00fcnstler wie Magdalena Abakanowicz, Cecilia Vicu\u00f1a, Hannah Ryggen, Faith Ringgold, Sheila Hicks, Jagoda Bui\u0107, Lenore Tawney und viele andere. Darunter fehlte mir Olga de Amaral, die bis zu ihrer Pariser Show vor allem unter Textilfachleuten bekannt war.<br \/>\nCecilia Vicu\u00f1as Arbeiten waren nur teilweise beeindruckend. Sie hatte eine ganze zus\u00e4tzliche Wand f\u00fcr sich, die sie mit sehr kleinen Arbeiten bedeckte, was die Wand noch nicht fertig aussehen lie\u00df. Aber ihre gro\u00dfe Arbeit am Eingang der Ausstellung kam gut an!<br \/>\nDann gro\u00dfe Namen aus der bildenden Kunst: Louise Bourgeois, Judy Chicago, die (soweit ich wei\u00df, selbst nie eine Nadel angefasst hat), Tracey Emin und Ghada Amer. Es war deutlich zu erkennen, dass Kunstkuratoren wissen, wer auf der Kunst-Biennale in Venedig anwesend war, zum Beispiel Malgorzata Mirga-Tas, Igshaan Adams, Myrlande Constant, Jeffrey Gibson, Tau Lewis, Pacita Abad, Antonio Jose Guzman und einige mehr.<br \/>\nIch war \u00fcber einige schlecht gemachten Arbeiten nicht sehr gl\u00fccklich, z. B. die Arbeiten von Feliciano Centurion (Collage), Tschabalala Self (Collage), Jose Leonilson (Stickerei), Georgina Maxime (Kleid) und Kevin Beasley (audiovisuell), aber das ist immer ein Problem, wenn Kunstkuratoren die Werke ausw\u00e4hlen. Sie k\u00fcmmern sich nicht darum, wie gut die Arbeit gemacht ist, wichtig ist Ihnen nur die zum Ausdruck gebrachte Idee. Es war Jack Lenor Larsen, der Verfechter textiler Kunst, der nach Werken suchte, die Pr\u00e4senz hatten und in den meisten F\u00e4llen auch sehr gut gemacht waren.<\/p>\n<p>Es gab neun Werke aus der Sammlung des Stedelijk Museums, aber leider war kein einziger niederl\u00e4ndischer K\u00fcnstler in dieser Ausstellung vertreten. Das ist ein weiteres Problem der Kuratierung. Aus dem Katalog \u201eTextiles- Collection Stedelijk Museum\u201c (ca. 1990) wei\u00df ich, dass es niederl\u00e4ndische Textilwerke in der Sammlung gibt (zum Beispiel Werke von Anna Verwey, Herman Scholten, Margot Rolf, Marian Bijlenga und vielen mehr), aber neuere Ank\u00e4ufe scheinen nicht von niederl\u00e4ndischen K\u00fcnstlern zu stammen? Und wenn es neuere Textilwerke gibt, warum wurden diese dann nicht in dieser wichtigen Ausstellung gezeigt? Einige Werke wurden in London gezeigt, aber nicht in Amsterdam, wie das Werk von Yinka Shonibare \u201eBoy on a Globe\u201c und \u201eHammock\u201c von Solange Pessoa, und einige weitere. Es blieb unklar wieso.<\/p>\n<p>Mein Fazit: Wir haben einen Punkt erreicht, an dem Textilien in der Kunst in wichtigen Museen sichtbar sind. Es w\u00e4re ein gro\u00dfartiger n\u00e4chster Schritt, wenn sich einige Kuratoren\/Organisatoren auf Textilkunst spezialisieren w\u00fcrden, um Textilien umfassender wertzusch\u00e4tzen und dabei sowohl den k\u00fcnstlerischen Wert als auch die Materialit\u00e4t und die technischen Fertigkeiten dieser Kunstwerke ber\u00fccksichtigen.<br \/>\nDer Katalog war sehr schwer (etwa 2 kg). Er ist im Prestel Verlag erschienen und kostet bei Amazon etwa 45 Euro.
